The temple of Khnum at Esna is Located 155Km (96 miles) north of Aswan. The temple, rebuilt by Ptolemy VI (180—145 BC) on an older structure, was probably once as large as the one at Edfu. Nowadays people come to see the temple’s wonderful 1st century AD Roman Hypostyle Hall—the only part that’s been excavated. Here you get a true sense of what the hall was meant to represent. With 24 columns topped by various finely carved floral capitals, it really feels like a beautifully enclosed garden. The walls are decorated with carvings of various Roman emperors making offering to Egyptian deities.
