Aswan in Egypt is one of the most famous touristic cities in the world, and in it, there are a lot of museums, one of the most impressive museums is the Nubian Museum. This museum includes about 3000 masterpieces from different eras divided over 17 different displaying sections, and these sections are the Nubia region, the Nubian environment, the origin of the Nile Valley, the prehistoric era, the Neolithic civilization, the pyramids era, the Nubian medieval era, the Nubian kingdom of kush, the Egyptian Civilization in Nubia, the family 25, the kingdom of Meroe, the late-era, Christian Nubia, Islamic Nubia, irrigation zone, the international campaign to rescue Nubian monuments, and the folklore section.

 

How to reach it 

 

People can reach the Nubian museum easily by renting a taxi or by car. There are a lot of cafes and hotels near the museum. The museum opens its doors from 9 A.M – 1 P.M and then from  4 P.M – 9 P.M.


 

 

History of the Aswan Nubian Museum

 


The Nubian Museum is one of the most beautiful museums in Egypt and the whole world, as it has a unique architectural design, and in 2001 this museum won the prize of Agha Khan as the most beautiful architectural buildings in the world, the architect who designed this museum is the Egyptian architect Mahmoud El-Hakim, while the museum exhibitions were designed by the Mexican designer Pedro Ramirez Varquez, the construction process of this museum cost Egypt about 75 Million Egyptian pounds and the museum opened its doors to the visitors in November 1997 and its opening ceremony hosted by the famous singer Mohamed Mounir, who is one form Aswan sons. The idea from building this Museum was for saving the Nubian monuments and the building of this museum was a part of the UNESCO campaign for saving the monuments from the high dam building, and the plans to build it started in the eighties of the last century.

 

 

 

Construction of the Museum 

 

The building of the Nubian Museum from the outside is surrounded by a big garden, which includes a lot of different plant species originally from Egypt. The inside of the museum consists of 3 floors. The first floor is below the ground level and it’s where the workshops and restoration laboratories are located. The second floor is a somewhat larger hall which includes a lot of monuments. Last but not least, the third floor contains a library, café, rooms for the museum staff, and rooms to keep safe the photography and microfilms.

 

 

Inside the Museum

 


Inside the Nubian museum, the visitor will find different monuments from different eras, but the most famous masterpiece in this museum is a Skelton of a human being, this Skelton age is about 20 thousand years old, and it was discovered in Aswan in 1982. In the museum there are about 103 pieces belonging to the Islamic era, 503 Pieces belong to the Ancient Egyptian period, 52 pieces belong to the Coptic era, and about 500 pieces whose origin remains unknown that show Aswan’s and Nubian history. In front of each piece, the visitor will find a card that identifies this piece in both Arabic and English. 

 

The ancient pieces of history that you will find inside the Nubian Museum are different and unique from any other museum. Expect to find gorgeous Jewelry, crowns, and precious stones alongside some tools, furniture, musical instruments, clothes, household utensils, pottery bowls. The aforementioned items & much more were all used by the Nubian people throughout history. Other more eccentric items such as figures portrait the daily life of the Nubians, their clothes, their occupations, how they created their handcrafts amongst many other things.

 

One of the many activates that the visitor can do during his visit to the Nubian Museum is to walk in the garden surrounding the museum building from the outside. There you will be able to enjoy the fresh air and the amazing view of the beautiful Egyptian Flora.  The museum also includes about eighty historical statues and historical rocks. Amongst the other features of this garden, there is also a cave that contains ancient drawings and some artificial lakes, symbolizing to the Nile River.  The aforementioned area also regularly hosts a plethora of Nubian shows performed by the Nubian people for the museum visitors to show them the Nubian traditions and culture.
