A wonderful adventure to Abu Simbel to explore the Great Sun Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Queen Nefertari. On the North of Ramses Temple, the Nefertari Temple was built by Ramses II in honour of his favourite wife Queen Nefertari amongst another 200 wives and concubines. Both Temples were discovered in 1813 and were almost completely covered with sand. Then both temples were moved in 1960 by the help of Egyptian Government and UNESCO to avoid the rising waters of the Nile. Ramses II  built the Temples mostly to honour himself as inside there is a mural depicting his famous victory at the Battle of Qadesh where his army defeated their  enemies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Find everything you need to know to plan your perfect trip.

1.Is Aswan worth visiting as part of an Egypt holiday?

Very much so. Aswan is one of Egypt's most rewarding destinations and offers a completely different atmosphere to Cairo or Luxor. Its combination of ancient monuments, vibrant Nubian culture, stunning Nile scenery, and relaxed pace makes it an essential stop on any Egypt itinerary — and one that many visitors find to be the highlight of their trip.

2.How do I get to Aswan from Cairo or Luxor?

Aswan is accessible from Cairo by domestic flight in approximately one and a half hours, or by overnight sleeper train for a more scenic and leisurely journey. From Luxor, the drive takes around three hours by road, or you can sail between the two cities on a Nile cruise, stopping at temples along the way. Most organised Egypt tour packages include transfers between cities.

3.What is Philae Temple and why is it special?

Philae Temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis and sits on a small island in the Nile, reached by a short motorboat ride. What makes it particularly remarkable is that the entire complex was dismantled block by block and relocated to its current island in the 1970s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser following the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The island setting, combined with the temple's beautifully preserved carvings, makes it one of the most atmospheric ancient sites in Egypt.

4.What is the Unfinished Obelisk and why should I visit?

The Unfinished Obelisk lies in an ancient granite quarry on the outskirts of Aswan, abandoned thousands of years ago when a crack appeared in the stone. Had it been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk ever carved in ancient Egypt. The site is fascinating because it reveals exactly how ancient Egyptians quarried and shaped stone — the obelisk remains partially attached to the bedrock exactly as the workers left it.

5.Can I take a felucca ride in Aswan?

Yes, and it is one of the most enjoyable things to do in the city. Traditional wooden felucca sailboats have navigated the Nile for thousands of years, and an afternoon or sunset sail around Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island is a wonderfully peaceful experience. It is a perfect way to appreciate Aswan's beautiful river scenery at a gentle pace.

6.What is the Aswan High Dam and is it worth visiting?

The Aswan High Dam is one of the most significant engineering achievements of the 20th century, completed in 1971 and fundamentally transforming Egypt's agricultural and energy infrastructure. A visit provides fascinating context for understanding modern Egypt alongside its ancient past, and the scale of the structure — and the vast Lake Nasser it created — is genuinely impressive. It is typically visited as part of a combined tour with Philae Temple and the Unfinished Obelisk.

7.What is there to do in Aswan in the evening?

Aswan's evenings are best enjoyed along the Nile corniche, where the city's relaxed atmosphere comes into its own. A sunset felucca ride is particularly memorable, while the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show offers a colourful and atmospheric evening experience. The local souk is also lively after dark, with stalls selling spices, Nubian crafts, dried hibiscus, and handmade jewellery in a bustling and authentic setting.

8.Is Aswan a good base for a Nile cruise?

Yes. Aswan is the traditional starting point for Nile cruises sailing north to Luxor, and most classic four or five day cruise itineraries depart from here. Sailing downstream, you visit Kom Ombo and Edfu temples before arriving in Luxor, combining some of Upper Egypt's greatest ancient sites with the timeless experience of travelling the Nile by boat.

9.What is Kitchener's Island in Aswan?

Kitchener's Island, also known as the Island of Plants, is a lush botanical garden in the middle of the Nile established in the early 20th century. Filled with tropical trees, palms, and flowering plants from across Africa and Asia, it provides a tranquil green escape from Aswan's heat and makes for a pleasant contrast to the stone temples and desert landscapes that define most of the city's sightseeing.

10.How does Aswan compare to Luxor as a destination?

The two cities complement each other beautifully and are best experienced together. Luxor is the more monument-heavy destination, with a denser concentration of temples and tombs including the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. Aswan offers a more relaxed pace, more intimate cultural encounters through its Nubian communities, and arguably more scenic Nile landscapes. Most Egypt itineraries include both cities, either independently or as part of a Nile cruise.

11.Is it possible to see Aswan's highlights in a single day?

A day trip to Aswan from Luxor or the Red Sea is possible and allows you to visit Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the Aswan High Dam comfortably with a guide. However, to fully appreciate what Aswan has to offer — including Abu Simbel, a Nubian village visit, felucca sailing, and the local souk — at least two to three days is strongly recommended.

12.What is the local market like in Aswan?

Aswan's traditional souk is one of the most enjoyable and least pressured markets in Egypt. Stalls are stacked with aromatic spices, dried hibiscus flowers used to make the local karkade tea, Nubian jewellery, hand-woven textiles, and traditional crafts. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely local, making it a far more authentic shopping experience than the tourist-heavy bazaars of Cairo.

A Perfect Blend of History and Leisure

Our trip to Egypt was truly special. While every ancient site was breathtaking, the most memorable moment came during our Nile cruise. Our guide, Ahmed, saw our genuine curiosity about local life. He arranged for us to take a small boat to a remote village, where we shared mint tea with a local family. Sitting on their rooftop, we watched the sunset over the river and listened to their stories,
