Your tour leader collects you from your hotel in Aqaba in a private air-conditioned vehicle, and you'll drive around ninety minutes north to Petra.
Founded around the 6th century BC by the Nabataean Arabs, Petra is a city carved directly into rose-red sandstone by a people who built a trading empire on the incense route. From the visitor centre, your local guide takes you through the Siq — a narrow gorge over a kilometre long, with walls rising sheer on both sides — to the moment it opens onto the Treasury. You can cover the first stretch on horseback or on foot.
From Petra, you continue to the protected area of Wadi Rum. Lawrence of Arabia passed through this landscape and called it "vast, echoing and god-like," and the phrase has stuck because nothing else quite covers it.
There you'll transfer to a 4x4 jeep for around ninety minutes, driving through rugged sandstone mountains and across coloured sand dunes, stopping at canyons and at rock inscriptions carved by travellers thousands of years ago.
Afterwards you'll be driven back to your hotel in Aqaba.
