Your tour manager collects you from your hotel in Amman, and you'll drive south to Petra, Jordan's greatest attraction and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Founded around the 6th century BC by the Nabataean Arabs — a nomadic people who settled here and built a trading empire reaching into Syria — Petra is a city carved directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs.
You'll ride on horseback towards the entrance of the Siq, then continue on foot with your local guide through the narrow gorge until it opens onto the Treasury. There's no photograph that quite prepares you for that moment.
After your time at the site, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Amman.
This day trip to Petra from Amman is a long day, but it's the most straightforward way to see the site if you're based in the capital.
