Why does the time of year matter so much for a Nile cruise?
The season decides how comfortable your temple visits will be. A Nile cruise isn't just time on deck: you'll walk around Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu and Kom Ombo most mornings, often with little shade.
In Upper Egypt, the gap between seasons is bigger than most British travellers expect. A January morning in Luxor feels like a warm English summer's day, while a July afternoon can pass 40°C. The river looks the same all year, but how much you enjoy the sites changes completely.
Which months are best for a Nile cruise from the UK?
For most UK travellers, the best time to cruise the Nile is November, late January, February (outside half-term) or March. These months give the best balance of weather, light and value. Days are warm and dry, evenings are pleasant on deck and the flight from London is about five hours.
October is lovely but still hot in the first half of the month, with highs around 35°C in Luxor. December has the mildest days, but Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year. April is warm, with occasional dusty khamsin winds blowing in from the desert.
If you can travel in term time, the last week of November and the first three weeks of March are hard to beat. You'll get comfortable sightseeing temperatures and far fewer families on board.
★ Memphis Tours Expert Tip
If you travel in a busy week, ask your guide to reach the Valley of the Kings and Karnak at opening time. The first hour is the coolest and quietest part of the day, before most cruise groups arrive.
How do UK school holidays affect Nile cruise prices?
UK school holidays push up prices and crowds, especially at Christmas, February half-term and Easter. These weeks line up with Egypt's best weather, so cabins on the best ships and flights from the UK sell out first.

If your dates are fixed by the school calendar, book early and look at the days just before or after the holiday week. Travelling two or three days earlier can lower the price without changing the weather.
Is a Nile cruise in December a good idea?
Yes. A Nile cruise in December gives you the mildest weather of the year, with daytime highs around 24°C in Luxor and sunny skies. It's the classic winter-sun trip from the UK.
There are two things to plan for. First, early mornings and evenings can drop to 7°C, so you'll want a jumper for balloon flights and evenings on the sun deck. Second, the weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive. Early December offers the same weather at a lower price.
Many ships hold a festive dinner on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, so ask what's included when you book. Our Pyramids, Nile Cruise and Hurghada holiday is a popular choice for a winter break, with a few days of Red Sea sunshine at the end.
Can you take a Nile cruise in the summer?
You can, and it's when prices are lowest, but you need to be comfortable with heat. From June to August, daytime highs in Luxor and Aswan reach 40–42°C, and the sun is strong from mid-morning.
Summer cruises work well if you plan around the heat. Guides start temple visits at 6 or 7 a.m., you rest on board during the hottest hours, and you spend the late afternoon by the pool on deck. Ships are air-conditioned, and with fewer passengers you'll often have the sites almost to yourself.
★ Memphis Tours Expert Tip
For a summer cruise, choose a ship with a shaded sun deck and a pool. You'll spend the hottest hours on board, so a good deck makes a bigger difference than a larger cabin.
What's the weather like on a Nile cruise in spring and autumn?
Spring and autumn are warm and dry, with long, bright days. They're the best seasons if you want comfortable sightseeing and better value than winter.
In March and April, highs climb from about 29°C to 35°C, and the light is good for photography. Spring is also when the khamsin can blow, a hot desert wind that sometimes brings dust for a day or two. In October and November, the heat eases week by week, and by mid-November it's ideal.

How far ahead should you book a Nile cruise from the UK?
Book 6–9 months ahead for Christmas, New Year and February half-term, and 3–6 months ahead for other winter dates. Summer cruises can often be booked a few weeks before you travel.
The best five-star ships and dahabiyas have a limited number of cabins, and they're the first to sell out in peak weeks. Flights from the UK to Luxor and Cairo also rise in price as dates fill up, so it pays to book your cruise and flights together.
★ Memphis Tours Expert Tip
If you're travelling at Christmas, book your Abu Simbel excursion at the same time as your cruise. Early-morning places to the temples fill quickly in the busiest weeks.
Can you add Jordan to a Nile cruise holiday?
Yes, and the best months to combine them are March to April and October to November. That's when both the Nile and Petra have comfortable temperatures.
In midwinter, Egypt is pleasant, but Petra and Wadi Rum can be cold, with frosty nights and the odd rainy day. In summer, both are very hot. Our Best of Egypt and Jordan tour pairs a Nile cruise with Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea, and is easiest to enjoy in spring or autumn.
What should you pack for your season?
Pack light, breathable layers that cover your shoulders and knees, plus one warm layer from November to March. Whatever the season, you'll need sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.
- Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream (all year)
- Comfortable trainers or walking shoes for uneven temple floors
- A jumper or fleece for cold early mornings from November to March
- Swimwear for the sun-deck pool (warm enough from April to October)
- A scarf for dusty days in spring and to cover your shoulders
- A refillable water bottle for long summer mornings

Yes. January is one of the most comfortable months, with daytime highs around 23°C in Luxor and almost no rain. After the New Year week, prices drop and ships are quieter until February half-term, which makes the second half of January excellent value.
Rain is very rare in Upper Egypt. Luxor and Aswan get almost no rainfall in a typical year, so you can plan outdoor visits with confidence. The only weather to watch for is the occasional dusty khamsin wind in spring.
Yes. Summer is low season, and cruise and hotel rates are usually noticeably lower than in winter. The trade-off is the heat, so sightseeing starts very early and the middle of the day is spent resting on board.
Most travellers choose a 3- or 4-night cruise between Luxor and Aswan, combined with Cairo. A 7-night round trip gives a slower pace and more time at each temple. The best time to go is the same whatever the length.
Yes, Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan all year. In the hottest months, some ships take a break for maintenance and others run fewer departures, so the choice of ships is wider from October to April.
