The city of Petra is one of Jordan's national treasures, the capital of the Nabataean Arabs and is one of the most famous archaeological & Touristic sites. In 1812 Johannes Burckhardt set out to ‘rediscover’ Petra; After this, Petra became increasingly known in the West as the lost city, and it began attracting Travellers. Petra is also known as the rose-red city, because of its wonderful colour of the rock from which many of the city’s structures were carved.
The Siq of petra is the entrance of the city, it is a narrow gorge, over 1km in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, 80m high cliffs. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of the Treasury which is a popular tourist attraction in petra and is one of the most elaborate temples in the ancient Arab Nabatean Kingdom.
