Built as the Cecil Hotel in 1929 by the French-Egyptian Jewish Metzger family, it was designed to give a ‘romantic’ appeal whilst having that colonial facade of the times. Situated at Saad Zaghloul square it is directly in front of the Corniche in Alexandria. The Steigenberger Cecil Hotel is also historical for its past famous guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, Al Capone and Somerset Maughan. In 1952, the Hotel was seized by the Egyptian Government and the Metzger family were expelled from Egypt. However, in 2007, the Cecil Hotel was returned to the family who then sold it back to the Egyptian government. Today, it belongs to the Steigenberger chain of Hotels who have a worldwide reputation for luxury and comfort.
