Steigenberger Cecil Hotel Alexandria

Overview:

Built as the Cecil Hotel in 1929 by the French-Egyptian Jewish Metzger family, it was designed to give a ‘romantic’ appeal whilst having that colonial facade of the times. Situated at Saad Zaghloul square it is directly in front of the Corniche in Alexandria. The Steigenberger Cecil Hotel is also historical for its past famous guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, Al Capone and Somerset Maughan. It is also situated close to St. Mark's Coptic Cathedral,Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Alexandria Stadium. Also nearby are Qaitbay Fortress and Pompey's Pillar. In 1952, the Hotel was seized by the Egyptian Government and the Metzger family were expelled from Egypt. However, in 2007, the Cecil Hotel was returned to the family who then sold it back to the Egyptian government. Today, it belongs to the Steigenberger chain of Hotels who have a worldwide reputation for luxury and comfort.

Currency Exchange Service

Here in Egypt, the local currency is known as the Egyptian Pound. It can often be difficult to get smaller notes so it is advisable when you can, to change 200, 100 and 50 notes when you can to either 5, 10, or 20 Pound notes. The Hotel reception will offer you an exchange service and their will be a small commission charge on changing currencies (they will take British Pounds, US Dollars and Euros). There are ATM machines and Banks in the City of Alexandria which will also take a small charge for using the machine overseas.

Transportation

In Alexandria,It is not advisable for tourists to travel on local transport such as the small minibuses or local larger buses. They are very crowded and you will probably end up getting lost if you do not know your way around. The Borg El Arab International Airport of Alexandria lies approximately 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Alexandria and hosts internal (domestic) flights within Egypt along with some Charter flights arriving from other outside destinations.
