Amman is the capital of Jordan, and the country's economic, political and cultural centre. Situated in north-central Jordan. The Amman Governorate has the largest population of the 12 governorates of Jordan, It has an estimated population of 4,000,000 and a land area of 1,680 square kilometres. Today, Amman is considered a major tourist destination in the region, particularly among Arab and European tourists. New resorts and hotels dot the city and there are many things for the traveller to see and do in and around Amman.
 
The main airport serving Amman is Queen Alia International Airport, situated about 30 km south of Amman.
 
Amman City is divided into East of Amman and west of Amman. East of Amman is full of historical sites which frequently host cultural activities, while West Amman is more modern and serves as the economic center of the city.
 
The Romans conquered much of the Levant in 63 BC, inaugurating a period of Roman rule that lasted for four centuries. the Roman rule in Jordan left several ruins across the country, some of which exist in Amman, such as the Temple of Hercules at the Amman Citadel, the Roman Theatre, the Odeon, and the Nymphaeum.
